limestone pavement
Clint and grike
A limestone pavement is a flat expanse of exposed limestone bedrock, typically found in karst landscapes.
The surface is divided into blocks called clints, separated by deep fissures called grykes, created by rainwater dissolving the rock along natural fractures.
These formations support distinctive plant communities in their sheltered crevices: The limestone pavement of the Yorkshire Dales.
