barbing

Creating sharp projections

Barbing is the act of adding barbs—sharp, backward-pointing projections—to wire, hooks, or arrows.

In fishing, barbing a hook makes it harder for caught fish to escape.

The word also describes verbal attacks: His constant barbing wore her down.

In parts of West Africa, barbing means getting a haircut, from barbershops called "barbing salons."
