ball-and-socket joint
Hip's movement mechanism
A ball-and-socket joint is a joint in which a rounded end fits into a cuplike cavity, allowing movement in all directions.
The hip and shoulder are ball-and-socket joints.
The term also applies to mechanical joints with the same design: The lamp's ball-and-socket joint lets you angle it anywhere.
