sandstone arch
Eroded stone span
A sandstone arch is a natural rock formation where erosion has carved an opening through a sandstone wall or fin, leaving a curved span of rock overhead.
These formations develop over millions of years as wind, water, and ice wear away softer layers while harder stone remains.
Delicate Arch in Utah is perhaps the most photographed sandstone arch in the world.
The term also applies to architectural features mimicking this form.
