backup tape
Data insurance cartridge
A backup tape is magnetic tape used to store copies of computer data for safekeeping.
Before hard drives became cheap and cloud storage ubiquitous, organizations relied on tape systems to preserve data in case of system failure or disaster.
The term evokes older IT infrastructure: The sysadmin ran nightly backups to tape.
Tape backup still exists in enterprise settings where vast amounts of data need inexpensive archival storage.
