bacchants

Frenzied ritual celebrants

Bacchants are frenzied followers of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine.

In ancient ritual, they were devotees—often women—who celebrated with wild dancing, intoxication, and ecstatic abandon.

The term now applies figuratively to revelers or anyone caught up in drunken, orgiastic festivity: The party devolved into a scene of bacchants stumbling through the garden.
