autobrake

Automatic deceleration system

Autobrake is an automatic braking system, particularly on commercial aircraft, that applies brakes at a preset deceleration rate upon landing or during a rejected takeoff.

Pilots select a setting before touchdown—typically ranging from low to maximum—and the system engages without manual input: Set autobrake to three for this runway length.

The term also appears in automotive contexts for collision-avoidance systems that brake automatically when sensors detect an imminent impact.
