anal glands

Canine scent organs

Anal glands are small sacs located on either side of the anus in many mammals, particularly dogs and cats.

They produce a pungent, oily secretion used for scent marking and identification.

When functioning normally, they empty during defecation, but blocked or infected glands may require manual expression by a veterinarian or groomer: The vet had to express the dog's anal glands.
