amazons

Tall, fierce women

Amazons are the plural of Amazon—tall, strong, athletic women.

The term comes from Greek mythology's race of female warriors and extends to any formidable woman: The volleyball team was a squad of amazons.

In zoology, amazons are green parrots of the genus Amazona, popular as pets for their talking ability. (Capitalized Amazons refers to the mythological warriors or the company's products.)
