alternative rock
Grunge's broader category
Alternative rock is a broad category of rock music that emerged in the 1980s outside the mainstream, encompassing styles from jangly college radio fare to grunge to indie.
The label originally meant an alternative to commercial rock, though many alternative bands achieved massive commercial success: Nirvana's breakthrough made alternative rock the dominant sound of the early nineties.
The term has become so elastic it now describes more of a radio format than a coherent musical style.
