acid house

Chicago electronic genre

Acid house is a style of electronic dance music that emerged in Chicago in the mid-1980s, characterized by repetitive beats, synthesized basslines, and the squelchy sound of the Roland TB-303 synthesizer.

The genre fueled rave culture in Britain and Europe through the late 1980s and early 1990s: The acid house scene brought all-night warehouse parties to London.

The "acid" refers to the corrosive, bubbling quality of the distinctive synth sound, though the term's drug connotations weren't unwelcome.
