UK drill
British street rap
UK drill is a subgenre of hip-hop that emerged in South London in the early 2010s, characterized by dark, aggressive beats, sliding 808 basslines, and lyrics often depicting street violence and gang life.
It drew from Chicago drill but developed a distinctive sound with slower tempos and more melodic flows.
The genre has faced controversy and police scrutiny, with some tracks removed from platforms and artists prosecuted for lyrics: The UK drill scene blew up after "Man's Not Hot" went viral.
Artists like Headie One, Pop Smoke (who brought the sound to New York), and Central Cee have shaped its global influence.
