Memphis soul

Southern R&B style

Memphis soul is a style of soul music that developed in Memphis, Tennessee during the 1960s, characterized by a raw, gritty sound built on punchy horn sections, gospel-influenced vocals, and a driving rhythm section.

Associated primarily with Stax Records and artists like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and Booker T. & the M.G.'s, it emphasized feeling over polish—earthier and less orchestrated than the smoother Motown sound coming out of Detroit.
