Winckelmann
Greek art theorist
Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717–1768) was a German art historian whose writings on ancient Greek art established art history as an academic discipline.
His idealization of classical Greek aesthetics—emphasizing "noble simplicity and quiet grandeur"—profoundly influenced neoclassicism and shaped how Western culture understood ancient art for two centuries.
