The Gambia

Senegal's slender enclave

The Gambia is a small West African country, a narrow strip of land following the Gambia River, almost entirely surrounded by Senegal.

The definite article is part of the official name, distinguishing it from the river: I'm traveling to The Gambia next month.

It is Africa's smallest mainland nation.
