The Ashes

England-Australia cricket series

The Ashes is a Test cricket series played between England and Australia, among the oldest and most celebrated rivalries in international sport.

The name refers to a satirical 1882 obituary mourning English cricket after Australia's first victory on English soil, declaring the body would be cremated and "the ashes taken to Australia." A small urn, purportedly containing burned cricket bails, became the trophy's symbol.

The series alternates between the two countries: England retained the Ashes with a 2-1 series win.
