TATA box
Gene expression signal
A TATA box is a DNA sequence found in the promoter region of many genes, typically located about 25-30 base pairs upstream from the transcription start site.
The sequence—usually TATAAA or a close variant—serves as a binding site for transcription factors that help position RNA polymerase to begin copying the gene.
The name comes from the nucleotide letters in the sequence.
The gene's TATA box was mutated, reducing expression levels.
