Spygate
Patriots filming controversy
Spygate refers to either of two American political controversies.
The first involved the New England Patriots football team secretly videotaping opposing coaches' signals in 2007, violating NFL rules.
The second, more politically charged usage emerged in 2018 when President Trump alleged the FBI had improperly surveilled his 2016 campaign: Trump called it the biggest political scandal in history.
Both meanings trade on the -gate suffix that has attached to scandals since Watergate.
