chiggers
Tiny biting larvae
Chiggers are the larvae of certain mites that attach to skin and cause intensely itchy red welts.
Common in tall grass and wooded areas during warm months, they're a familiar nuisance in the American South and Midwest: I got eaten up by chiggers at the picnic.
Also called redbugs or harvest mites.
