Songhai

Saharan trade power

Songhai refers to a West African empire that dominated the Niger River region from the 15th to 16th centuries, or to the people and languages associated with it.

The Songhai Empire, centered at Timbuktu and Gao, was one of the largest states in African history before its collapse in 1591.

Today Songhai identifies an ethnic group in Niger, Mali, and neighboring countries, as well as their Nilo-Saharan languages.
