Sidney Poitier

Sidney Poitier (1927–2022) was a Bahamian-American actor who became the first Black man to win an Academy Award for Best Actor, for *Lilies of the Field* (1963).

His dignified performances in films like *In the Heat of the Night* and *Guess Who's Coming to Dinner* made him a symbol of racial progress in mid-twentieth-century Hollywood.

He later directed films and served as a diplomat for the Bahamas.
