Humphrey Bogart

Humphrey Bogart (1899–1957) was an American film actor who became the archetype of tough, world-weary masculinity.

His roles in *Casablanca*, *The Maltese Falcon*, and *The African Queen* established a persona—cynical yet honorable, hard-drinking, romantically wounded—that still defines a certain ideal of cool.

He's doing his Bogart impression.

The verb bogart, meaning to hog or monopolize, derives from his name.
