Schmalkaldic League
Lutheran defensive coalition
The Schmalkaldic League was a defensive alliance of Protestant German princes and cities formed in 1531, named for the town of Schmalkalden where they met.
The league resisted Holy Roman Emperor Charles V's efforts to suppress Lutheranism.
It was defeated militarily in 1547 but helped establish the principle that German rulers could determine their territories' religion.
