Ross Ice Shelf
Floating Antarctic glacier
The Ross Ice Shelf is the largest ice shelf in Antarctica, a floating mass of glacial ice roughly the size of France extending into the Ross Sea.
Ice shelves form where glaciers flow off land and float on the ocean while remaining attached to the coast.
The Ross Ice Shelf's seaward edge forms a sheer ice cliff rising about 50 meters above the water, historically called the Great Ice Barrier by early Antarctic explorers.
