Roman legion
Caesar's military unit
A Roman legion was the principal military unit of ancient Rome, typically comprising 4,000 to 6,000 infantry soldiers organized into smaller cohorts and centuries.
Legions were numbered and often named, becoming semi-permanent formations with distinct identities and histories.
The term now evokes disciplined military organization or, more loosely, any large organized force: a legion of fans, their troubles are legion.
