Roanoke Island
Croatoan mystery site
Roanoke Island is a barrier island off the coast of North Carolina, between the mainland and the Outer Banks.
It is best known as the site of the "Lost Colony," an English settlement established in 1587 whose inhabitants vanished without clear explanation by 1590.
The mystery endures in American folklore and gives the island its historical significance.
