coastal exploration
Surveying the littoral
Coastal exploration is the activity of investigating, surveying, or traveling along coastlines—whether for scientific research, navigation, recreation, or discovery.
Historically, it refers to maritime expeditions charting unknown shores: Early coastal exploration mapped the Pacific Northwest.
Today it often describes recreational activities like hiking seaside trails or kayaking along rocky shores.
