Reeve

Medieval estate manager

A reeve is a local official or overseer.

Historically in England, a reeve administered a manor or district on behalf of a lord or the crown—the shire reeve became the sheriff.

In Canadian municipal government, a reeve heads the council of a rural municipality or township.

The word survives mainly in historical contexts and Canadian local politics.
