Quill

Name for people

A quill is the hollow shaft of a feather, especially one cut and sharpened for writing before the advent of metal pens.

The word extends to the feather itself, to the sharp spines of a porcupine or hedgehog, and to various hollow, shaft-like objects.

As a verb, to quill is to pleat fabric into small ridges resembling feather shafts: a quilled collar.
