Pythagoras' theorem

Right triangle rule

Pythagoras' theorem states that in a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides.

Expressed as a² + b² = c², it's fundamental to geometry and has countless practical applications in construction, navigation, and physics.

The theorem predates Pythagoras but bears his name in Western tradition.
