narrative setting
Where plot unfolds
Narrative setting is where and when a story takes place—the physical location, time period, and social environment that frame the action.
Setting shapes mood, constrains characters, and can function almost as a character itself: The oppressive heat of the Mississippi Delta becomes part of the narrative setting.
In fiction writing, establishing setting early orients readers and grounds the story in a specific world.
