Old Republic
Before the Empire
Old Republic refers to the historical era of the Galactic Republic in Star Wars, the democratic government that preceded the Empire and lasted thousands of years before its fall.
The term evokes a romanticized past of Jedi peacekeepers and senatorial governance: Obi-Wan spoke of the Old Republic as a more civilized age.
Outside Star Wars, Old Republic may refer to various historical republican governments, particularly Brazil's First Republic (1889–1930).
