Novgorod Republic

Russian merchant state

The Novgorod Republic was a medieval Russian state centered on the city of Novgorod, lasting from the 12th to 15th centuries.

It was governed by an assembly of citizens called the veche, making it unusually democratic for its era.

A major trading power connected to the Hanseatic League, it controlled vast northern territories before Moscow absorbed it in 1478.
