Northern Alliance

Anti-Taliban military force

Northern Alliance refers to a military coalition, most notably the Afghan United Front that opposed the Taliban in Afghanistan from 1996 until the U.S. invasion in 2001.

The alliance consisted of various ethnic militias—primarily Tajik, Uzbek, and Hazara forces—and controlled territory in northern Afghanistan.

After September 11, 2001, the Northern Alliance partnered with American forces to topple the Taliban government: Northern Alliance fighters entered Kabul in November 2001.
