Helmand
Southern Afghan region
Helmand is a province in southern Afghanistan, site of intense fighting during the Afghan War (2001–2021).
The name also refers to the Helmand River, Afghanistan's longest, flowing through the region.
In news coverage, Helmand became synonymous with Taliban insurgency and coalition military operations: British forces were deployed to Helmand in 2006.
