North American buffalo

Yellowstone grazing giant

The North American buffalo is properly called bison—a large, shaggy-headed bovine that once roamed the Great Plains in vast herds.

European settlers called them buffalo by analogy with African and Asian species, though true buffalo are distinct animals.

The near-extermination of bison in the 19th century devastated Plains Indian cultures that depended on them.

We saw buffalo grazing in Yellowstone.
