Mr. Smee
Mr.
Smee is the bumbling first mate to Captain Hook in J.M.
Barrie's *Peter Pan* and its many adaptations.
He serves as comic relief—loyal but incompetent, rotund and good-natured despite his profession as a pirate.
Unlike his menacing captain, Smee is often portrayed as almost friendly toward the Lost Boys.
The name has become shorthand for a harmless sidekick to a more threatening villain.
