Mexican Spanish

Language south of border

Mexican Spanish is the variety of Spanish spoken in Mexico, the most populous Spanish-speaking country.

It differs from Peninsular Spanish and other Latin American varieties in vocabulary, pronunciation, and some grammar.

Mexican Spanish has absorbed indigenous words, especially from Nahuatl: chocolate, tomato, avocado.

It serves as a major reference dialect for Spanish-language media in North America.
