J-cut
Sound before image
A J-cut is a film and video editing technique where the audio from an incoming scene begins before its corresponding video appears, creating an audio bridge between shots.
The name comes from how the edit looks on a timeline—the audio track extends leftward like the bottom of a J.
J-cuts smooth transitions and build anticipation: The sound of crashing waves faded in while we still watched her packing.
The opposite technique is an L-cut, where audio from the outgoing scene continues over new visuals.
