Iphigenia

Aulis altar victim

Iphigenia is a figure from Greek mythology, daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra.

When the Greek fleet was becalmed at Aulis, her father sacrificed her—or in some versions, substituted a deer at the last moment—to appease Artemis and gain favorable winds for Troy.

Her story appears in Greek tragedy, notably Euripides' *Iphigenia at Aulis* and *Iphigenia in Tauris*.

The name occasionally appears as a given name, though rarely.
