Hank Williams

Honky-tonk music pioneer

Hank Williams (1923–1953) was an American country music singer-songwriter whose brief career produced standards like "Your Cheatin' Heart," "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," and "Hey, Good Lookin'." His plaintive voice and songs of heartbreak, drinking, and salvation defined honky-tonk style and influenced generations of country, rock, and folk musicians.

He died at twenty-nine from heart failure related to alcohol and drug abuse, cementing his legend as country music's archetypal tragic figure.
