Hail Caesar

Ancient imperial greeting

Hail Caesar is a salute to a ruler or leader, from the Latin *Ave Caesar* used to address Roman emperors.

The phrase appears in historical dramas and references to ancient Rome: The gladiators entered the arena crying "Hail Caesar!".

It may be used ironically to mock someone acting imperiously.

Hail Caesar is also a classic salad made with romaine lettuce, croutons, parmesan, and a creamy dressing—properly Caesar salad, named for a Tijuana restaurateur.
