Gallows

Hardcore punk band

Gallows is a wooden frame used for execution by hanging, typically consisting of two upright posts supporting a crossbeam from which the condemned is suspended by a rope around the neck.

The word often appears in singular form even when referring to one structure: led to the gallows.

Gallows humor is grim joking about death or dire circumstances—the kind of levity that might occur among those facing execution.
