Gallo-Romance

French language ancestor

Gallo-Romance refers to the group of Romance languages that developed in ancient Gaul, the region roughly corresponding to modern France, parts of Belgium, Switzerland, and northern Italy.

These languages descended from Vulgar Latin as it evolved among populations that had spoken Gaulish Celtic languages before Roman conquest.

The group includes French, Occitan, Franco-Provençal, and related varieties.

Linguists use the term to classify these languages together based on shared features distinguishing them from Ibero-Romance or Italo-Romance branches.
