CpG islands
Promoter region markers
CpG islands are regions of DNA with high concentrations of cytosine-guanine dinucleotides, typically found near gene promoters.
In molecular biology, these sequences are significant because their methylation status affects gene expression—methylated CpG islands generally silence genes, while unmethylated ones allow transcription.
Abnormal methylation patterns in CpG islands are associated with cancer and other diseases.
