epigenetic
Beyond the genome
Epigenetic describes changes in gene expression that don't alter the DNA sequence itself.
Environmental factors, diet, stress, and aging can switch genes on or off through chemical modifications that sit "above" the genetic code: Epigenetic changes may explain why identical twins develop different diseases.
These modifications can sometimes be inherited across generations, complicating the old nature-versus-nurture divide.
