CinemaScope

Fifties panoramic projection

CinemaScope is a widescreen film format developed by 20th Century Fox in the 1950s, using anamorphic lenses to squeeze a wide image onto standard 35mm film and then expand it during projection.

The format produced a panoramic aspect ratio of roughly 2.35:1, dramatically wider than the nearly square screens of earlier cinema.

CinemaScope became synonymous with epic, visually spectacular filmmaking: The Robe was the first CinemaScope release.

Though the brand name fell out of use, it established widescreen as the cinematic standard.
