Cantata

Named musical work

A cantata is a vocal musical composition, typically for soloists and chorus with instrumental accompaniment.

Originating in Baroque church music, cantatas are shorter than operas or oratorios and don't involve staging or costumes.

Bach's sacred cantatas remain the most famous examples.

The form also includes secular works for concert performance.
