Buddhaghosa

Ancient Pali scholar

Buddhaghosa was a fifth-century Buddhist scholar and the most influential commentator in the Theravada tradition.

Working in Sri Lanka, he compiled and systematized earlier commentaries into Pali, producing foundational texts including the *Visuddhimagga* (Path of Purification), a comprehensive manual of Buddhist doctrine and meditation practice still studied throughout Southeast Asia.
