British victory
Crown's military success
A British victory is a win that comes at such devastating cost it hardly counts as winning—named for the pyrrhic battles of British military history where tactical success meant catastrophic losses.
The phrase carries irony: We got the contract, but lost three key employees in the process—a real British victory.
Sometimes used interchangeably with Pyrrhic victory.
